Gin rummy for teachers
Gin rummy is a good card game for math and strategy lessons: students add card values, compare totals and think about chances. Everything here works without ads, without logins, and nothing your class does is sent to us.
Play on the projector
Open the game in projector mode: big cards, large text and no menus. With the open-cards view the class can also see the computer’s hand and discuss its choices. Press Esc to leave projector mode.
Deadwood counting quiz
Show a random 10-card hand. Students find the melds and add up the deadwood, then reveal the answer. Ace = 1, number cards = their number, J Q K = 10.
Lesson ideas
- Mental addition: count deadwood out loud each turn. Is it 10 or less yet?
- Subtraction and comparing: score a knock: the difference between two counts. When is it an undercut?
- Chance: how many unseen cards would complete a meld? With 4♥ 5♥ in hand, which cards help (3♥ and 6♥), and how many could still be in the stock?
- Sets and patterns: sort a hand into sets and runs in different ways and find the one with the lowest deadwood.
- Strategy: before each discard, ask the class what the computer might be collecting from the cards it picked up.
