Straight gin rules
In straight gin you may not knock. The hand only ends when a player goes gin, with all 10 cards in melds. Everything else, including scoring, is the same as standard gin rummy (Wikipedia).
- Gin scores 20 + the other player’s deadwood. There is no laying off after gin.
- If the stock runs down to two cards without gin, the hand is a draw.
- The game on this site goes to 100 points. Some players use a higher target because every hand needs gin.
Tips for straight gin
- Low deadwood alone does not help you: only complete melds count. Keep cards that can still become melds.
- Because hands last longer, watching the discard pile matters even more.
- High cards cost you more when the other player goes gin, so dump the ones that are not working.
